Fiji is a beautiful island nation located in the South Pacific known for its crystal-clear waters, stunning coral reefs, and rich marine life. Spearfishing is a popular activity among locals and tourists alike, as it allows you to get up close and personal with the underwater world and catch your own dinner. One unique way to experience Fiji’s spearfishing culture is by participating in a homestay program. This program allows visitors to stay with a Fijian family in a traditional village and learn about their way of life, including their fishing and cooking techniques. During your homestay, you’ll have the opportunity to join your hosts on spearfishing trips and learn from them about the best spots to catch fish. You’ll also learn how to prepare and cook your catch using traditional Fijian methods, such as cooking in a lovo (an underground oven). Aside from spearfishing, you’ll have plenty of other opportunities to immerse yourself in Fijian culture during your homestay. You can participate in traditional ceremonies, learn to weave baskets or mats, and even try your hand at Fijian drumming or dancing.
